Richmond treats a private-yard container differently from one in a street, sidewalk, or alley.
Richmond Planning says a portable storage unit or dumpster may generally sit temporarily in a private yard for up to 15 consecutive days during a move without a permit, subject to the city’s stated location and setback conditions. A longer stay during renovation can raise different requirements. The zoning office, not a rental quote, decides whether a particular property fits those conditions.
Identify the private position on a survey or by clear property features. Keep the box out of required access, shared drives, and utility areas. If the proposed stay is longer or the only available yard position is in front of the building, check the current zoning requirements before booking.
The Richmond Department of Public Works says all work performed within public right-of-way requires a Work in Streets Permit. It expressly lists dumpsters and portable storage units. Public Works also notes that occupying metered parking with a temporary dumpster requires a Parking Division permit.
A complete request describes the address, owner and contractor contacts, proposed location, purpose, and expected dates. The city asks for a sketch showing the container in relation to the street, sidewalk, intersections, trees, poles, hydrants, and other fixed features. Prepare that location information before delivery is scheduled.
