Dimensions: height is the whole story
The 30-yard container measures 22' L × 7.5' W × 6' H. On the ground it occupies exactly the space a 20-yard box does — the extra ten cubic yards come from 1.5 feet of additional wall. That has two consequences. First, any site that fits a 20 fits a 30, so the placement check is identical: firm level surface, straight truck approach, overhead clearance. Second, loading changes — you cannot casually swing material over a six-foot side, so plan to carry debris in through the rear door and build the load from the back wall forward, big items first.

Old Dominion Landfill, run by Republic Services at 2001 Charles City Road in eastern Henrico County — roughly 2.5 miles west of Richmond International Airport — takes municipal solid waste alongside construction, demolition, and debris waste. Beyond it, the region has four permitted construction/demolition/debris landfills with about 16 million tons of additional capacity, coordinated regionally through the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. Your side of the job is loading legal material below the rail; routing the load is ours.

A 30-yard box full of concrete, dirt, brick, or plaster is not a load any truck should move. Dense debris hits the weight allowance at a fraction of this container's volume, which is why heavy material belongs in a smaller box or at a strictly limited fill line agreed in advance. If a demolition produces both masonry and light debris, say so — separating the streams into the right containers is routine, and it is far cheaper than an overweight box that cannot leave the site.
Jobsite placement and the right-of-way line
On a private parcel — a parking lot, staging yard, or wide drive — placement is settled in the booking call. The moment the box needs a city street, alley, or sidewalk, the City of Richmond requires a Work in Streets Permit, with dumpsters expressly listed, and a pre-construction meeting with the Right of Way Inspector five business days before the right-of-way is obstructed. Volume, not weight. The 30 shares the same 22-foot footprint as the 20-yard box but adds 1.5 feet of wall height, so it takes the bulky, lighter material of a full gut — framing lumber, cabinetry, drywall, fixtures, and packaging — without midway swap-outs. For dense debris the extra height does not help; weight limits govern first.
Can concrete or dirt go in a 30-yard dumpster?
Not as a full load. Thirty yards of concrete far exceeds what a truck can legally carry, so dense material belongs in a smaller box or at a strictly limited fill line. Tell us the heavy fraction up front and we will structure the rental around it — sometimes that means two containers with different rules.
Do I need a permit to put a 30-yard box in a Richmond street?
Yes.
