Each has a natural size: contained jobs fit the 15-yard box, whole-house work usually lands on the 20, and a full clear-out of a large house can justify the 30.
Driveway placement, done carefully
A residential drop lives or dies on the driveway. We check the surface, the slope, and the truck's straight-line approach before dispatch, and we ask about gates, overhead lines, and low branches because those stop a delivery at the curb. Position the box so garage doors, walkways, and meters stay reachable, with the rear door aimed at the shortest loading path from the house. On pickup day the approach has to be clear again — a parked car in front of a loaded container postpones the haul.
Moving? The city publishes a 15-day allowance
Richmond Planning's guidance says a dumpster or portable storage unit may generally sit in a private yard for up to 15 consecutive days during a move without a permit, subject to the city's stated location and setback conditions. A rental timed inside that window keeps a moving purge simple. Longer stays during a renovation can raise different requirements, and the zoning office makes that call — tell us your planned duration and we will schedule the pickup against it.

Sometimes you do not need us, and we would rather say so. City of Richmond residents can take bulk items, brush, and appliances at no charge to the East Richmond Road Convenience Center (3800 East Richmond Road) or the Southside Transfer Station (3520 North Hopkins Road) — city residents only, proof of residency required, weekday and Saturday hours. Henrico residents have two public use areas at $5 per trip, with up to four tires included and a $20 fee for refrigerant appliances. Chesterfield's convenience centers charge $9 per pickup-truck load of household debris, take construction debris at $15 per single pickup load, and cap visits at a double load.
Now the fine print that sends people to a roll-off. Every one of those programs is residents-only. Henrico prohibits material from rental properties, vacant lots, or businesses outright — a landlord clearing a tenant turnover cannot use the $5 gate. Chesterfield's centers refuse dedicated loads of asphalt and concrete and list dirt and stumps as prohibited. And a whole-house cleanout at two loads per visit is a week of driving. The box exists for the volume, the materials, and the schedules those rules exclude.

Can furniture and mattresses go in the dumpster?
Furniture, boxed contents, and general household goods are normal residential loads. Ask before loading mattresses, electronics, or anything with a chemical label — some items carry separate handling rules, and confirming first avoids a rejected load. Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my Richmond driveway?
No — a box kept fully on private property does not involve the city right-of-way permit. Richmond requires a Work in Streets Permit only when the container occupies a street, alley, sidewalk, or metered space. For a private yard during a move, city guidance describes up to 15 consecutive days without a permit, subject to location and setback conditions.
What about refrigerators, freezers, and AC units?
Appliances containing refrigerant are handled separately from general debris — Henrico’s public disposal sites, for example, charge a $20 fee for refrigerant appliances. Set them aside and mention them when you book so the right handling is arranged rather than discovered at the landfill.
